THE BASICS

What Is Genius in Spelling Bee?

Genius is the second-highest rank in the Spelling Bee puzzle, just below Queen Bee. You reach it by earning 70% of the puzzle’s total possible points. It is the goal most players chase, because it shows you found most of the words without needing every one.

The catch is that every puzzle has a different total, so the Genius score changes daily. This calculator multiplies the total by 70% and rounds up to the next whole point, because you need at least 70% to qualify. The game itself may differ by a point on rare days.

Here is a quick chart for common totals.

How Points Are Scored

A four-letter word is worth 1 point. Longer words earn 1 point per letter, so a six-letter word is worth 6. A pangram, which is a word that uses all seven letters, adds a 7-point bonus on top of its length.

Here is a quick example. If today’s total is 150 points, 70% is exactly 105, so Genius starts at 105. If the total is 151, 70% is 105.7, so you need 106. Rounding up keeps you from stopping a point short.

Because pangrams carry such a big bonus, finding one early is often the fastest way to close the gap.

Tips for Reaching Genius

Start with pangrams. Look for common endings such as -ING, -ED and -ION that use many of the seven letters.

Aim for long words. One eight-letter word is worth more than several four-letter ones.

Build around the center letter. Every word must contain it, so try prefixes and suffixes that wrap around it.

Work the word forms. Add -S, -ED, -ER and -ING to words you have already found.

Track your progress. Check in with the calculator now and then. If you want a nudge, our hints page helps without giving away every word.

First check the total you entered, because a wrong total changes the answer. The game may also round a cutoff differently, so a difference of one point is possible.
