THE BASICS
What Counts as a Spelling Bee Word?
In the Spelling Bee puzzle, a valid word has at least four letters, uses only the seven letters in the hive and includes the center letter. Letters can repeat, so a word like “alibi” is fine even though it uses a letter twice.
Proper nouns, hyphenated words and very obscure terms are left out. The puzzle’s own list is chosen by its editors, so no outside word list matches it perfectly. Ours is a large English dictionary with common words marked, which makes it best for study and practice.

Word Patterns Worth Knowing
Many Spelling Bee answers share the same building blocks. Prefixes such as RE-, UN-, IN- and DE- open up whole families of words, and endings like -ING, -ED, -ER, -LY and -ION multiply what you can find.
Use the Starts with and Ends with boxes to explore a pattern. Search for words ending in -ION to see how many long words end that way, or search for words that contain a letter pair like QU to see which words use it.
Searching after the puzzle is a good way to study, because seeing every word that fits a pattern teaches you the shapes to look for next time. To get nudges on today’s hive without browsing a list, visit our hints page.
