THE BASICS
How Spelling Bee Ranks Work
Every Spelling Bee rank is a percentage of the puzzle’s total possible points. You start at Beginner with zero points, then climb through Good Start, Moving Up, Good, Solid, Nice, Great and Amazing. Genius sits at 70%, and Queen Bee means you have found every word.
Each puzzle has its own total, so the points behind every rank change daily. A fixed chart cannot tell you that, but the calculator can. Its cutoffs are rounded to the nearest whole point, so the game itself may differ by a point on some days.
| Rank | Share of total points |
|---|---|
| Beginner | 0% |
| Good Start | 2% |
| Moving Up | 5% |
| Good | 8% |
| Solid | 15% |
| Nice | 25% |
| Great | 40% |
| Amazing | 50% |
| Genius | 70% |
| Queen Bee | 100% |

How Points Are Scored
A four-letter word is worth 1 point. Longer words earn 1 point per letter, so a six-letter word is worth 6. A pangram, which is a word that uses all seven letters, adds a 7-point bonus on top of its length.
Pangrams are the quickest way to climb. A single pangram can lift you a full rank, so it pays to hunt for one early.
Here is a quick example. Say today’s total is 150 points and you have 90. That is 60%, so you are at Amazing. Genius needs 105 points, which is 70% of 150, so you are 15 points away.

Tips for Reaching Genius
Start with pangrams. Look for common endings such as -ING, -ED and -ION that use many of the seven letters.
Build around the center letter. Every word must contain it, so try prefixes and suffixes that wrap around it.
Go long. One eight-letter word is worth more than several four-letter ones.
Work the forms. Add -S, -ED, -ER and -ING to words you have already found.
Take a break. Stepping away often lets you see words you missed. If you still want a nudge, try our hints page before opening any full answers.
