BY THE NUMBERS

How Much Are Today’s Pangrams Worth?

Both of today’s pangrams earn the 7-point bonus on top of their length. Together they are worth 29 points, which is about 12% of the puzzle’s 244-point total.

That may sound small, but you only need 171 points for Genius. Finding both pangrams covers 29 of those points in just two words, leaving 142 points to come from the rest of the list.

The pangrams also tend to be among the longest words in the puzzle, so they are worth finding even if you reach Genius without them. They are required if you are aiming for Queen Bee.

A good routine is to look for the pangram early, then work through the shorter words afterward. Many players find that thinking about the long words first makes the short ones easier to spot.

THE BASICS

What Is a Spelling Bee Pangram?

A pangram is a word that uses every one of the seven letters in the hive at least once. Like every other word in the puzzle, it must be at least four letters long and must contain the center letter.

Every daily puzzle has at least one pangram, and some days have two, three or even more. Because each pangram scores a flat 7-point bonus, they are some of the most valuable words you can find. Many players treat the pangram as the main goal of the day.

A pangram can be exactly seven letters long, or it can be longer if it repeats some letters. Longer pangrams earn more base points, but the bonus stays the same for every one.

SPECIAL CASE

Perfect Pangrams Explained

A perfect pangram uses each of the seven letters exactly once. That means it is always exactly seven letters long, and any seven-letter pangram is automatically a perfect pangram.

Perfect pangrams are popular with purists because they are tidy and surprisingly hard to spot. Today’s hive contains one perfect pangram and one longer pangram that repeats a letter.

SCORING

Pangram Scoring Table

A pangram scores its length plus a 7-point bonus. The bonus is the same no matter how long the word is.

Pangram lengthBase pointsBonusTotal
7 letters (perfect)7+714
8 letters8+715
9 letters9+716
10 letters10+717
12 letters12+719

For example, a 7-letter pangram earns 14 points in total, while a 10-letter pangram earns 17. Compared with an ordinary word of the same length, the pangram is always worth exactly 7 points more, so it is the best value in the whole puzzle.

PRO TIPS

Six Ways to Find the Pangram

If today’s pangram is hiding from you, these habits help players of every level.

1
Hunt for compound words
Many pangrams are two smaller words joined together. Look for two short words that together cover all seven letters.
2
Try common endings
Test endings such as -ING, -ED, -LY and -ER on short words. Check whether the hive contains the letters those endings need.
3
Follow the vowels
When the hive has several vowels, long and flowing words become more likely. Try pairing vowels with the center letter.
4
Start from the center letter
Every pangram contains the center letter. Write it down and build outward with common letter pairs.
5
Look for repeated letters
A pangram can repeat letters, which makes it longer than seven. If seven-letter tries fail, think about eight- and nine-letter words.
6
Use the hints ladder
If you are stuck, take the hints above in order. Each step gives a little more help without showing the word.
